While SOLIDOWORKS Sheet Metal isn’t typically used for cardboard packaging design, the robust and versatile software met my needs for the task. Having used SOLIDWORKS Sheet Metal to design a variety of automotive and HVAC parts, I saw the potential to apply it to a cardboard packaging design problem. The IT Department wanted to replace the boxes they were previously purchasing because of their cost and lack of durability. For example, the IT Department at our Waltham office requested an improved cardboard box for shipping phones and other small items to employees who are working in other locations or traveling. With the Normal Cut tool, you can normalize all non-normal side walls in sheet metal models.Being an intern at Dassault Systemes 3DEXPERIENCE Lab, I get many opportunities to test my design skills. In a miter flange, edge flange, sketched bend, hem, or jog, you have to select a bend position. The Cross Break command lets you insert a graphical representation of a cross break in a sheet metal part. In HVAC or duct work design, cross breaks are used to stiffen sheet metal. The Welded Corner PropertyManager allows you to add a weld bead to the corners of a folded sheet metal part, including miter flanges, edge flanges, and closed corners. Adding Weld Beads to Sheet Metal Corners. With the Unfold and Fold tools, you can flatten and bend one, more than one, or all of the bends in a sheet metal part. The Base-Flange feature is not used with the Lofted Bend feature. Lofted bends in sheet metal parts use two open-profile sketches that are connected by a loft. Bent lofted bends form a realistic transition between two profiles to facilitate instructions for press brake manufacturing. You can create a bent lofted bend to create physical bends, rather than formed geometry and approximated bend lines in a flat pattern. You can view how the corner treatment impacts the folded sheet metal body and how it carries over to the flat pattern. You can apply corner treatments to a folded sheet metal body that will persist in the flattened state. The Break Corner/Corner-Trim tool cuts or adds material to a folded sheet metal part on an edge or a face. The Jog tool adds material to a sheet metal part by creating two bends from a sketched line. This is available only in sheet metal parts with Flatten-Bends1 and Process-Bends1 features. You can roll back all bends from a sheet metal part in which bends have been inserted so that you can make additions, such as adding a wall. You can add closed corners between sheet metal flanges. Closed Corners and the Closed Corner PropertyManager. This lets you dimension the bend line to other geometry. You can add bend lines to a flat face of a sheet metal part with a sketched bend feature. The hem tool adds a hem to your sheet metal part at a selected edge.

You can create compound bends in sheet metal parts using the Swept Flange tool.

You can add edge flanges to one or more edges.Ī miter flange feature adds a series of flanges to one or more edges of a sheet metal part. You can specify how the tabs and slots look and how they are distributed along the selected entities. The Tab and Slot feature creates tabs on one body and slots (holes) on another body to interlock the two bodies. The direction of the depth automatically coincides with the sheet metal part to prevent a disjoint body. The depth of a tab feature is automatically set to the thickness of the sheet metal part. Use the Sheet Metal Gusset PropertyManager to create sheet metal gussets with specific indents across bends. You can create sheet metal gussets with specific indents that go across bends. The Bends PropertyManager allows you to convert a shelled part to a sheet metal part. Insert bends allows you to convert a shelled part to a sheet metal part. Sheet metal PropertyManagers help you create and modify sheet metal parts:Ī base flange is the first feature in a new sheet metal part.
